Visual Instrument is a software package which was derived from individual windows software developments for several customers in the late 90es. At this time a lot of software for the configuration field devices was developed. Visual Instrument has to be understood as an example showing the various possibilities in Windows programming. A presentation of the functions of is given here.
If you like to have a more detailed look to the handling of the software you may download a setup here. To start the setup you have to extract the files change to the directory disk1 and start SETUP.EXE. The program was designed for the Windows 16 bit subsystem which remained unchanged during the last years. Therefore it is also running under e.g. Win98, Win2000 and Windows XP.
The demo version works with a full functional device simulation. However there is a little bug in the demo. It works only if a valid com port is selected even if it is based on a simulation. Please perform the following steps:
1. Select the com port in the project manager:

2. Open the Device Data menu and click Com Port Settings:

3. Select a valid com port and click OK:

4. Select the device in the project manager:

5. Open the Connection menu and click Establish Connection:

6. Visual Instrument is connecting to the simulated device by reading the unique identifier as specified by the Hart protocol:

Now you are in able to have a look to the device handling functions like monitors for the measured values and the diagnostic bits and the device data manager. The device data manger is very similar to the so called DTMs which are used together with a FDT. If you want to see the Device Data manager please perform the following steps explained in Device Data Handling.
You may also use a real device with Visual Instrument. In this case the device data handling is done by a general device data Window working only with the Universal and some Common Practice Commands of the Hart Protocol.
